Esteban Ocon has emerged as the front-runner to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes if the British driver follows through on his threat to retire next season. Hamilton’s future, 37, remains up in the air after the controversial season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – a race that saw him ultimately miss out on the 2021 Drivers’ title.
“So there will be nothing and no interaction with the Mercedes Grand Prix team.”
When asked if he had been in talks with Mercedes about a possible move after 2021, Ocon, 25, replied: “I don’t really have to comment on that.”
Before Ocon put pen to paper, Wolff had publicly praised his former protégé’s progress despite finding himself in a “strange” situation.
“He was a Mercedes junior for a long time, now he’s an Alpine works driver and that’s a fact,” said Wolff. “I think the situation there is good for him, he’s growing, he’s performing – he’s French! “
